Portable Smart Resistance Training System
Project Overview

LoadAxcis is a portable smart strength-training device designed to make data-driven training accessible to everyday athletes and coaches. The system combines adaptive resistance hardware with real-time performance feedback, helping users monitor training progress and improve technique across different training environments.

The goal of this project was to explore how intelligent hardware and intuitive interaction design could transform complex training data into clear, actionable insights for users.

Problem


How a portable device could provide accessible performance data while remaining simple to use in everyday training environments.

Pain Points
Advanced strength-training technologies are commonly used in elite sports teams, but they are often expensive, complex, and inaccessible to everyday athletes.Many gym users and grassroots coaches still rely on traditional equipment without objective feedback, making it difficult to evaluate performance or adjust training effectively.

User Research

User research included surveys and interviews with athletes, gym users, and coaches to understand their training behaviours and challenges

Key insights revealed that users wanted:
1. Real-time feedback during training
2. Clear and meaningful performance metrics
3. Professional-level insights in a compact device
4. Fast setup and compatibility with different environments
These insights informed the core design direction of the product.

Concept Development

Multiple concept directions were explored to identify the most promising solution.

Through this evaluation process, LoadAxcis was selected as the final concept due to its strong balance between usability, performance feedback, and feasibility.

Portable cable-based resistance system
Adjustable resistance through a direct-drive motor
Real-time sensing of movement, velocity, and force

The interaction design focuses on simplifying complex training data. Key interaction features include:
1. Real-time visual feedback during training sessions
2. Instant session summaries after workouts
3. Long-term performance tracking through visual charts
This approach ensures users can quickly understand their training progress without needing expertise in sports analytics.
